Hi David,

Thank you for expressing the concern about Nighthawks losing their habitat.

Is there a way to creat habitats for them?

Is this a good project or are we setting ourselves up to be divebombed after
dark?

(I am still very selfish about my own wellbeing, LOL, LOL!!)

peace,

Joe Phillips

Subject: Re: [Ohio-birds] Grandview Nighthawks

Hi Joe,

I had a nighthawk displaying over King Ave. at Estrada's just east of Neil
last night (as I downed my Corona). The advice about flat roofs is good,
especially if they are older roofs with gravel. The newer composition
roofs are not attractive to nighthawks and I have read of some concerns
over this. As roofing technology changes nighthawks are losing habitat,
analogous to chimney swifts' losing nesting and roosting sites as we
convert to heating systems that don't need chimneys. Both species
(nighthawk & chimney swift) have almost totally abandoned their original
nesting habitat (gravel bars and hollow trees) and may be more at our mercy
than we realize.

Another place to look for nighthawks especially as summer moves along is
around floodlights at sports events. Cooper Stadium in August may have a
few at Clippers' home games. We could always count on them at Fenway Park
in Boston (where for many years they were the only thing worth watching).

Good luck.

Dave Horn
