This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for June 2, 2007.
Compiler: Paul Gardner. Email: [log in to unmask]

This is a summary of noteworthy birds reported from Ohio in the
previous week or so. Reports have been gleaned by the compiler from
various internet sources, particularly Ohio-Birds, The Ohio Birding
Forum, the RareBird.org forums, Cincinnati Bird Sightings Log,
Southwestern Ohio (Dayton) Rare Bird Alert, and from some individual
observers who kindly share their knowledge. Questions, comments,
complaints and additional noteworthy sightings not posted to one of the
above may be sent to the compiler.

Review List Species. (Review list species are sufficiently rare that
details of any sighting can help increase our understanding of Ohio's
bird life. Suggestions and guidelines for submitting documentation of
review list birds can be found at the OOS website (www.ohiobirds.org).

GLOSSY IBIS: Single birds found by Kenn Kaufman at Metzger Marsh on the
29th and again on the 31st continued Ohio's lucky streak for this
regional rarity.

WHITE-FACED IBIS: Kenn Kaufman confirmed a Metzger Marsh ibis as this
species on the 29th, but could not relocate it on the 31st.

BLACK-NECKED STILT: Frank Frick found two from the observation platform
at Miami Whitewater Wetland, Hamilton County, on the 25th. They have
not been reported after that date.

Other notable sightings

Yellow-crowned Night Heron: Lou Loibl saw one at Beaver Creek State
Park, Columbiana County, on the 25th. B.L. Brett spotted two on the
28th while kayaking upstream from Winton Woods Lake, Hamilton County.

Whimbrel: A flock of 22 diverted the attention of Matt Anderson at a
soccer game at Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, Lucas County on the 26th.

Baird's Sandpiper: A good bird in Ohio anytime, but particularly rare
in the spring. Rick Counts' observation of one at Longbrake Wetlands,
Hardin County, was an unexpected treat on the 28th.

Stilt Sandpiper: Rare in Ohio in spring, one made use of the Metzger
Marsh mudflat on the 1st according to Kenn Kaufman.

Wilson's Phalarope: Rick Count's found three at Longbrake Wetlands,
Hardin County, on the 28th

Laughing gull: Ken Davis located one on the beach at Alum Creek State
Park on the 26th. Rick Counts found one at Findlay Reservoir #1 on the
27th. The Metzger Marsh bird seems to have been last reported on the
29th by Kenn Kaufman.

Olive-sided flycatcher: Jim McCormac spotted one at the Oak Openings,
Lucas County, on the 27th. Dan Barda found one at Swan Creek Metropark,
Toledo, on the 28th. Kenn Kaufman had one at the Magee Marsh boardwalk
on the same day.

Yellow-bellied flycatcher: Neill Cade found one at Bowles Woods,
Hamilton County on the 25th. Kenn Kaufman reported them as "especially
numerous" on the Magee Marsh boardwalk on the 25th and still had
multiples on the 28th. Rob Thorn found one singing at Portman Park,
Franklin County, on the 29th.

Connecticut Warbler: On the 26th, Brad Sparks observed one west of the
parking lot at the Magee Marsh boardwalk and heard another at the near
the eastern end of the boardwalk. Secondhand reports placed a third
along the middle stretch.

"Brewster's Warbler": Matthew Studebaker found and photographed this
hybrid along Horseshoe Pond Trail in Cuyahoga Valley National Park on
the 27th.
