A few days ago early in the morning I was riding my horse across the South
Fork of the Licking River in Licking County and twice saw a bird I could
not identify. It was flying away from me and settled in a tree twice. I
did not see the bill, unfortunately. Nor did I hear a call. It appeared
to have a speckled breast, be about 12-16" long, and had a fan tail with
red/red-orange quite prominent. All I could come up with in Birds of Ohio
was a snipe. [Sorry I couldn't see the bill, which is quite distinctive
on a snipe.] Any thoughts about whether it might be a snipe or any
alternative suggestions would be more than welcome. Thank you.
