Hi Mike,

This is not a term that readily translates. Pajarear  is used in some
countries; however in Mexico it has a double meaning that does not
make it so useful. This need for a proper term has roots in the
relative newness (at least in in general from Mexico to South
America) of the act of going to a natural area solely for it's
enjoyment. It's more frequent use should be seen as a good sign for
an increasing general awareness of the connection between a healthy
ecosystem and avifauna diversity.

verbatim would be: Observador de las aves or Observador de aves

Ornitologo is used in the more specific meaning and is not very
practical.

One may also say something like: Vamos a observar aves. or voy a
observar aves

Good question. I am just back from Mexico where I saw some good
birds, got should be great wasps, but wish I had had more time to
dedicate to the watching.

p.d. This problem extends to Spanish bird names where there are no
standardized common names. This has broad consequences in the likes
of conservation. Many times the local name for a bird has a close
cultural connection making it difficult to readily change to a broad
standard. I believe there have been papers written on this topic.
