Hi Everyone,
I had the opportunity to revisit this fine wetland preserve for the first
time since May 22nd and was really saddened by the effect of the rainfall
deficiency in Central Ohio since then. The southern portion of the Oxbow
wetland has been reduced to a mere puddle with no bird species observed
there. Also, the experimental wetlands were only a few inches deep in spite
of continuous intake from the Olentangy River.
Bird species observed at the preserve:
Tree Swallow - 2
Great Blue Heron- 2 (incl. 1 juvenile)
Blue- winged Teal-3
Mallard-2
American Goldfinch-2
Red-Tailed Hawk-1
Red-wing blackbird-2 (1 male and female)
I observed the juvenile Great Blue Heron up close and personal(from about 6
feet). It froze once it detected me and at first tried to get away with
the classical heron-like pose to imitate a reed, then it relaxed a bit once
it decided I didn't pose a threat to it or it knew I wasn't going to buy
it's impersonation. I was studying it to see if it was a Wurdemann's or
Tricolored Heron but it wasn't to be because I understand these two species
are very few and far between in Central Ohio.
Has a Wurdemann's heron ever been oficially observed in Ohio?
