This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for July 20, 2007.
Compiler:
Brad Sparks. Email: [log in to unmask]

This is a summary of noteworthy birds reported from
Ohio in the
previous week or so. Reports have been gleaned by the
compiler
from various internet sources, particularly
Ohio-birds, The Ohio
Birding Forum, the RareBird.org forums, Cincinnati
Bird
Sightings Log, Southwestern Ohio (Dayton) Rare Bird
Alert, and
from some individual observers who kindly share their
knowledge.
Questions, comments, complaints and additional
noteworthy
sightings not posted to one of the above may be sent
to the
compiler.

Review List Species. (Review list species are
sufficiently rare
that details of any sighting can help increase our
understanding
of Ohio's bird life. Suggestions and guidelines for
submitting
documentation of review list birds can be found at the
OOS
website (www.ohiobirds.org).

MISSISSIPPI KITE: The now famous bird at the Brass
Ring Golf Course near Logan, Ohio was last seen on
7/16 by Rick Perkins. If a pair did breed at this
sight, juveniles should be appearing soon!

EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE: Su Snyder, Greg Miller, and
Marc Nolls observed the birds at the West Manchester
post office on 7/16. It seems as though this species
is well on its way to populating the state.

SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER: Rick Nirschl (of Nirschl’s
Warbler fame) observed and photographed a juvenile
bird on 7/15. The bird was in the field west of the
Toledo Airport, at the intersection of Wilkins Rd. and
Sager Rd. Later attempts to relocate this bird in the
area were unsuccessful. This species is almost always
a “one day wonder” in our state and this bird seems to
have reinforced this reputation.

Highlights:
American Avocet: Conneaut Harbor in the far reaches of
northeastern Ohio currently seems to be the place to
see this species. Ben Coulter reported two on 7/15
and Craig Holt observed three on 7/17.

Willet: Craig Holt spotted one at Conneaut Harbor on
7/17.

Wilson’s Phalarope: Rob Thorn found one male bird at
the Pintail Marsh area of Pickerington Ponds on 7/14.
This is a Franklin County Metropark just southeast of
Columbus. Last year the managers created some great
shorebird habitat by drawing down the impoundments,
hopefully this action will be repeated this year.

Lesser Black-backed Gull: Doug Overacker reported one
adult-plumaged bird on the beach at Buck Creek State
park on 7/15. This species is a treat to find along
Lake Erie in the winter, so an inland record in the
middle of the summer is outstanding.
