I have been watching the north end of Burr Oak Lake in Morgan County (DeLorme 70 D2) for shorebirds and whatever else might be around. The dry season has exposed some mudflat habitat there. Over the past week, there has been a steady but slow rate of shorebird turnover. Last night:

  Greater yellowlegs - 2
  Lesser yellowlegs - 1
  Least sandpiper - 13
  Solitary Sandpiper - 3
  Spotted sandpiper - 3
  Killdeer - 13

Also watched 2 Green Heron and one found a snake. The heron seemed as interested in its slow death as it did in consuming the snake. For over three minutes the snake attempted to get loose from the heron's bill. No matter how hard the snake thrashed around, the heron was patient - only giving it a negligible shake every now and then. Finally, down it went but not without a fight. It was brutal.
