I tried to post the message below several times over the last week but it
would not go for some reason. But here it is; remember it was written early
last week.
I just received a call from a friend on South Bass Island. Several
individuals had reported to her an unusual bird on the island today. The
books they are using lead them to believe it is a Carmine Bee-Eater. What
North American bird could be mistaken for a bee-eater? It appears, if their
id is correct, that some zoo has lost a bird or we have missed a major
weather front from the southern hemisphere. Has anyone heard of a zoo
losing birds recently? I told them to try to get a photo.
I talked with the individual who first found the bird near the airport on
Friday, July 28. He believes it is a individual of the northern race of
Carmine Bee-Eater and based on his description, I agree. I wonder if
African Safari near Pt. Clinton keeps African birds and this escaped from
there?
