I spent about an hour looking for evening Nighthawks and swifts around the Columbus Int'l Airport and just south of it in the suburb of Whitehall. Nighthawks were scattered, with small flocks at several locations, totalling no more than 16-20 birds for the entire evening. Chimney swifts were in small numbers everywhere, but there was a sizeable roost of 800 birds at Etna Elementary in Whitehall. This is nearly 4X the numbers I saw there 2 weeks ago. Two evenings ago on the 22nd, I had similar numbers at the Westerville roosts ( I use the plural here because the swifts use several chimneys in Westerville). This was also up 3-4X from 2 weeks ago, so swifts are definitely streaming into central Ohio now. I'd expect Nighthawks to have their first wave of migrants over the next few evenings, while swift numbers should continue to increase into early September before tapering off.
