WIth only a few free hours this morning, I focused on the southern parts of Hoover Reservoir. I suspected the northern end would get some coverage, and thought that the southern reaches might have some decent migrants. I visited the dam area, the area just north of the County Line Bridge (Areas E & F), and the Sunbury causeway. Many sandflats were exposed, but shorebirds were limited. Gulls & terns, however, put in a good showing. Highlights for the morning included:

TERNS - 12+ Caspians were scattered between the 3 sites, and a Forster's was fishing off the Sunbury causeway. Both sightings paled in comparison to the BLACK TERNS, which were massed in a large, straggling flock in the lower portion of the reservoir, north of the dam. At one point, I was able to count at least 46, but there may have been even more. A few were still wholly black, but most were in various stages of molt.

Gulls - plenty of Ring-bills, with flocks of 120 (by the dam) and 200 (on a sandbar off Area E), but nothing else yet

Shorebirds - Greater Yellowlegs were at every stop, along with Kildeer & Spotted Sandpipers, but no large numbers anywhere

Vultures - good numbers of Turkey Vultures have moved in, with 70 around the dam and 80+ up at the Sunbury causeway. 3 Black Vultures were mixed in with the flock at the causeway, possibly the same 3 that wintered in this area last year.

Swallows,Swifts - lots of Chimney Swifts, especially around the dam. The dam also had 6 Barn Swallows & 4 Cliff Swallows swirling around with the swifts.

Baltimore Orioles - 3 were in the riaprian area below the dam, and another was at the Sunbury causeway, representing a late burst in numbers of this early migrant.
