Hello everyone,

John Habig, Dan Sanders and myself spent the entire weekend birding, starting at a convection oven like and very windy Hoover Reservoir boardwalk on Friday afternoon where we located one Black-bellied Plover and approximately 9 Black Terns near Pelican Island. Dan and John found the Little Blue Heron earlier before I arrived, but was not seen later in the day. A juvenile Peregrine Falcon provided an absolutely dazzling aerial pursuit of shorebirds here, but was unsuccessful.

Saturday morning, we arrived at Conneaut Harbor around 7:30 AM and stayed for about three hours. In addition to the birds reported we saw 11 Common Mergansers fly by. Also, I will be posting on the Ohio Birds forum some digiscoped images of the 22 American Avocets. When the Avocets first arrived, there were only 21 of them and they stayed for about 45 minutes, flew to the east and 15 minutes later, they returned, and there were 22 of them. The birds originally arrived from the northeast and when they landed, most of the birds immediately started the side to side sweeping feeding. Awesome.

Further on Saturday at a hot and muggy northern end of Mosquito Lake, we re-found one Marbled Godwit at a great distance. There were hundreds of shorebirds here, but at great distances. In addition, we found 3 Long-billed Dowitchers.

Heading west on Saturday, we found 1 Snowy Egret on Turning Point Island near Sandusky. There were hundreds of Cormorants here too.

Sunday morning at Maumee Bay State Park, we relocated the Snow Goose on the beach near the lodge. It seemed to have a non life-threatening injury to one leg and was limping around. We later saw it fly south with a group of Canada's and didn't see it again. We had Forsters, Common and Caspian Terns as well - allowing a good study beside each other.

Later at Ottawa NWR, we found some more Snowy Egrets and one Cattle Egret that was not in breeding plumage. Also, we found two of John's and Dan's favorite bird - Trumpeter Swans.

Then, at Crane Creek State Park and Magee Marsh boardwalk we found some warblers near the back of the boardwalk, including Chestnut-sided, Prothonotary and Magnolia. Also Warbling Vireo, Great-crested Flycatcher and Eastern Wood Peewee.

I feel like I'm forgetting something, but thats about it..

It was an adventurous weekend of birding and I would like to send a BIG THANKS to John and Dan for helping me learn so much about Ohio Birds - and everyone else that reports here with so much valuable information.
