Had an unusual day of birding . From our deck in Wakeman, Lorain
County,. a female orchard oriole appeared at the feeder on our deck.
It stayed for quite some time at the feeder then disappeared. A rose-
breasted nuthatch managed to gather a few seeds from the feeders that
were full of gold finches.. It stayed briefly then flew to the front
of the house where I noticed the wild cherry tree was full of robins.
I didn't get another look at the orchard oriole or the nuthatch but
did notice a lot of ruby throated hummers darting aggressively toward
the feeders. Now that I know that rufus hummers may be about, I'll
watch to see if any appear.
A little after noon we drove toward Wellington, Lorain County going
south on Gore Orphanage, looping east to Hawley then north toward
Oberlin. We spotted lots of indigo buntings on the wires but the best
find was an immature bald eagle resting on the bank of a pond on
Hawley Road, just south of Nickle Plate Road. It stayed for quite
sometime apparently just resting before it was disturbed by swallows
then flew south. A perfect ending to the day.
