This morning was a combination of mercy mission and birding field trip.
Darlene Sillick, a wonderful person, nature lover, birder and "adopted daughter",
is off her feet due to surgery, and because of this has been house bound.
Cabin Fever sets in and you have to get out. We took Darlene to the Hoover
Nature Preserve Boardwalk at Area M in Galena, a break she really needed. The
weather was pleasant with a slight breeze, so we rolled out to a vantage point
on the boardwalk and settled in to enjoy the birds. This time they had to come
to us. The little blue heron obliged and stayed in front of us the entire
time we there, as it preened, fed and waded. Several ospreys flew around and
landed in the trees across the cove and the shorebirds came and went in small
flocks, stopping long enough for us to enjoy their presence. While we were
there about 8 birders we knew came out on the boardwalk and Darlene got to visit
with friends. Just getting out made it a better day, but with everyone coming
by while we were there it was a very good morning.
