To all:
At YSU non-tenured faculty are evaluated by students each term, for each
course they teach. Tenured faculty are evaluated for either Fall or
Spring, depending on where they fall in an alphabetic schedule. Student
fill out paper & pencil evaluations that allow for ratings and comments
regarding the course and the instructor. Numerical information
extracted by a scanner is summarized and provided to the instructors,
the chairs and the deans. Written comments are sent to the chairs for
review, and then passed on to the faculty members. As the comments are
hand written, they are not passed on to the faculty members until after
the term has ended. However, as students may have the same instructor
for multiple courses there is some sensitivity among students regarding
the transmittal of hand written comments, given that handwriting may be
recognized. Thus, many students do not write comments.
Currently, the process is administered by HR. However, there is an
active plan to move the process to IR to allow for more detailed
analysis of the results.
