I wandered along Darby Creek this morning looking for migrants, starting in Prairie Oaks MetroPark and finishing up down in Battelle-Darby MetroPark. Key stops were Darby Bend Lakes, and the Coneflower trail in Prairie Oaks, and the Indian Ridge Praire-Turkeyfoot Trail and Trail of the Ancients in Battelle-Darby. Migrants were scattered, with no real concentration points, but there was still fairly good diversity. Highlights included:

Yellow-billed Cuckoo - 1 was hunting caterpillars along the Trail of Ancients in Battelle-Darby. I watched as it took a very spiny caterpillar and 'chewed' down the length of it to remove most of the spines.

Swifts, Hummingbirds - small flocks of swifts were at most stops, but the only hummers I saw were 2 chasing along the Conflower trail at Prairie Oaks.

Flycatchers - small numbers of Pewees and Phoebes at most stops. More unusual was a Least Flycatcher along the Coneflower trail.

Vireos - very few, with a singing Warbling at Darby Bend Lakes and Red-eyeds along the Trail of Ancients

Thrushes - only a few Swainson's were scattered in most sites. Robin flocks were at several stops.

Mimids - Catbirds were at most stops, and a Brown Thrasher was calling along the edge of the Turkeyfoot Trail

Warblers - few and scattered. Most interesting was a late YELLOW-THROATED along the riparain forest edge at Darby Bend Lakes. Blackpolls were at several stops, and a Palm was foraging around the open picnic area at Darby Bend Lakes

Buntings/Grosbeaks - Indigo Buntings were at several stops, but never more than 3.

Icterids - small flocks of Redwings and grackles were around Prairie Oaks, and 2-3 Bobolinks were calling around the open fields of Darby Bend Lakes

Finches - a straggling PURPLE FINCH was foraging along the edge of the DarbyBend Lakes. Sizeable Goldfinch flocks were in the fields of the Coneflower trail and Trail of Ancients

Butterflies - Monarchs were everywhere, often hanging in clusters on goldenrods or small trees. Best spot was the Indian Ridge Prairie, where over 300 had accumulated on the blooming Rough Sunflowers and Ashy Goldenrods.
