Hello Matt,

Your concern for the birds speaks well of you, but you don't need to
worry about the Trumpeter Swans. They are a western species, and all
of Ohio's specimens are a result of an ODNR introduction program that
began in the mid-1990's. At many places around the state, like
Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area, you can commonly find Trumpeter Swans
wearing the green neck-collars that mark this program. Apparently
ODNR isn't collaring all the young now, since uncollared Trumpeters
have become common as well. Rather than being sensitive to human
disturbance, they seem to take readily to human handouts. Often at
Killdeer Plains they act like park ducks, swimming to the bank when
they see a car drive up.
