a major movement of common terns occurred off headlands beach state park this morning (09/20/2007) from 7:15 a.m. to about 10:10 a.m. i estimated more than 1,900 common terns during this time. 300+ terns milled about and sat on the west beach during my entire lake watch. a little before 8:00 a.m. an adult winter plumaged little gull passed the beach and headed east and within 15 minutes i spotted a juvenile sabine's gull out over the lake. it, too, was moving west to east as was the direction of the tern movement. about an hour after the sabine's gull a first-winter little gull was noted moving with a group of bonaparte's gulls right off the beach. i had only seen one bonaparte's gull the previous four days, today there were between 800 and 900 in the area. the sighting of the sabine's gull was unusual for me because the weather was neither stormy nor windy as it had been for my previous ohio sightings of this species. in fact the weather along the northcoast has been warm, sunny, and very uneventful for the past five days. three (3) black terns were also noted and, a sign of things to come, six (6) red-breasted mergansers were observed, again moving west to east.
