Hi all,

I had a juvenile Red-necked Phalarope today about 3:30 pm in Lawrence
County. This is our southernmost county, right along the Ohio River. The
bird was at the Lock 27 boat ramp, which is about 1.8 miles north of Rome.
If headed north, turn right on the road opposite of where State Rte. 243
heads off to the west, if I remember correctly.

This is an interesting place. The ramp area parking lot is primitive and not
far above the river, so it is regularly wave-washed and thick sediments are
deposited in the lot. There were a number of Killdeer, a Pectoral Sandpiper,
and a Lesser Yellowlegs foraging in the mud, and the phalarope was
fraternizing with them. There is a distinct paucity of shorebird habitat in
Lawrence County, and I'd bet this place regularly attracts interesting
birds.

I did get some nice photos of the phalarope and will stick those on my blog
sometime soon.

To add to Dave Horn's amazing discovery of a Cloudless Sulphur butterfly in
the Horseshoe during the game today, they are building up in southern Ohio.
I spent the last two days in Adams, Brown, and Lawrence counties and saw
many dozens of Cloudless Sulphurs as well as many Little Sulphurs, another
invader from the south.

Jim
