Like the Cambrian explosion, except much more recent and having nothing at all to do with invertebrate phyla, hordes of ruby-throated hummingbirds appeared on our feeders and, like the end-Permian extinction except still much more recent and having nothing at all to do with marine life (and hopefully not involving mass extinction) the hummingbirds disappeared. Their exodus coincided with the recent cold snap and the return of warm weather has not brought the little buggers back. We're keeping our feeders up in vain hope of a wayward broad tail or green violet-ear or non-fruit mango, but I think the season's over for us.
