It's still too early to call any hummingbird "late." In "The Birds of
Ohio," Bruce Peterjohn has this to say about the ruby-throated
hummingbird in the state: "The last migrants usually depart by Oct 5-12,
with few acceptable records during the last half of October. Sight
records during November or December require verification..." For Ohioans
interested in birds this book is essential, and it's a bargain.
Here are late records for ruby-throats over the past five years:
2006: 3 November
2005: 14 October
2004: 24 October
2003: 3 November
2002: 30 November (this is the latest accepted date for this species in
Ohio, when feeders in Columbus and Massillon were no longer useful for
migrants in the face of some nasty weather.)
In late fall and early winter every hummingbird should be looked at
carefully; this is when rare western strays have appeared here.
