I used the low-traffic morning to bird many sites along the Scioto River from Marble Cliff through Griggs reservoir and up to Kiwanis Park in Dublin. Normally traffic on nearby Route 33 makes birding these areas during the workweek a challenge. Today had only a modest migrant movement along the Scioto corridor here, but it was a beautiful morning to get out. Highlights included

Waterfowl - besides the expected geese and mallards, small groups of cormorants at every stop were an interesting indication of migration

Herons - Great Blues at every stop, but also had a Black-cr.Night Heron adult perching right on the lip of Griggs dam. Water, not surprisingly, was low and slow.

Raptors - Turkey Vultures at every stop, with Griggs dam's 20 leading the #s. Also had a pair of Sharpies soaring along the river north of Fishinger Rd, and a juvenile Osprey sitting in a snag at Kiwanis Park

Woodpeckers - mostly the expected resident, but 4 sapsuckers scattered along the bikepath at Marble Cliff was an unusual # for that spot

Flycatchers, Swallows - only Marble Cliff produced in these categories, with a calling Wood Pewee and 3 Rough-winged Swallows

Vireos, Jays - no vireos, but small groups of Blue jays were all along the river. Their major migration should come through over the next 2-3 weeks.

Thrushes, Mimids - 2 Swainson's Thrushes were lurking in thickets at Kiwanis. Catbirds present at only Griggs and Kiwanis, and their numbers were very low

Warblers - low #s, but managed to scratch up 10 species in a little over 2 hours: Yellow-rumps (most numerous; 12+ scattered across all stops), Cape Mays (2nd most common, with 6), Parula (2 at Marble Cliff), Bl-thr.Green (Griggs), Magnolia (Marble Cliff), Chesnut-sided (Kiwanis), Bay-breasted (Marble Cliff), Redstart (Kiwanis), Ovenbird (Marble Cliff), Com.Yellowthroat (Kiwanis)

Grosbeaks,Buntings - Rose-br.Grosbeaks at both Griggs and Kiwanis; Indigo Buntings at Kiwanis.

Sparrows - White-throated at several stops. No Juncos today, but had them at both Hoover and Blendon yesterday.
