Greetings---Walt S. had a neat experience watching a short-billed dowitcher as it fed at Conneaut the other day. I stopped to observe it that morning too---it nearly gagged once trying to swallow a rolled-up worm/slug. Watching it use it's various body parts while feeding, walking, preening etc. was fun. I never saw it fly, and it didn't call either. It was so tame, you could drive up close enough to watch it w/o needing even binocs. I did a tally of the shorebird species found in Ohio this year, and came up with 36. Three review spp.--Piping Plover, Black-necked Stilt, and Ruff. The only spp. left that is expected is Hudsonian Godwit. Illinois, Indiana, and West Virginia have hosted Wilson's Plover, Red-necked Stint, and Great Knot this year. So still to be sought after (with much crossed fingers) in the Great Lakes area for 2007 are: Snowy Plover, Long-billed Curlew, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, and Curlew Sandpiper. At least as far as I can recall. Later,
 Craig
