I hit some less-explored areas at Hoover this morning, including the Twin
Bridges area, inlets near Mudhen Marsh, and the south end of Wiess Road.
The best numbers were along Wiess Rd., though I found several Solitary
Sandpipers and a really rusty Pectoral Sandpiper (I was pretty excited when
I first spotted it...) in the other areas. In total, I saw 15 shorebird
species this morning. Wiess Rd. highlights include:
-Baird's Sandpiper - 6
-Stilt Sandpipers - 8
-Short-billed Dowitcher - 4
-American Golden-Plover - 1
-Buff-breasted Sandpiper - 14
-White-rumped Sandpiper - 1
The White-rumped was seen at pretty close range, and I was watching it when
something flushed all of the shorebirds (didn't catch what it was though).
I saw it flying away, and then the flock of Buff-breasted Sandpipers split
as they flew on each side of me, only about 10 feet away. That was pretty
cool.
Over the last 3 days, I've seen 18 shorebird species between Alum Reservoir
and Hoover Reservoir. It's a great time to get out, suffice it to say.
Good birding,
John
