Just a few more details on the one-minute wonder Ruff
at Conneaut, Saturday morning. The bird was a molting
adult male. It dropped in next to a Greater
Yellowlegs and was quite a bit shorter and fairly
stocky. The bill was quite distinctive - fairly short
with a bit of a downwards curve towards the tip. It
was all dark with a pale area at the base. The bird's
breast was blotchy gray and black, with a few black
spots indicating molt. The markings on the breast
extended about as far down as a Pectoral's, but ended
more jaggedly. The rest of the body was basically
mottled gray and black. In flight, it sport a weak
wingstripe and extensive white on the rump. It flew
sort of erractically, vaguely snipelike. In flight,
molt was also obvious, with gaps in the primaries and
secondaries. It stayed probably less than a minute.

That's all for now -
Gabe Leidy
