Migration seems to have really begun in earnest this evening. I was out between 4:00 - 4:30 and heard 26+ Swainson's Thrushes, 2 Veeries, and 2-3 unidentified warblers calling as they flew over. This comes after I only had 6 Swainson's & 2 Veeries the prior cloudy, drizzly night.
Twilight birds were also on the move. Port Columbus Airport had 25+ Nighthawks this evening, well above the 0 and 2 that I've seen there the last 2 evenings. This is the 'second wave' of migrant nighthawks; the first 'wave' was between Aug 24-29. I don't know exactly what these waves represent, but a good guess would be local Ohio-Penn birds in the first wave, Ontario-Michigan birds in the second. A smaller third wave often pushes through at the end of September, perhaps from further north in Canada.
Chimney Swifts are also massing. I had 1100+ sweep into an established roost chimney in Whitehall (an inner-ring suburb of Columbus) this evening. This is close to the peak number for this roost, and correlates with the 1700+ I had in an established Westerville roost several evenings ago. If you have any nearby swift roosts (and nearly eveyone in Columbus does), the next week should be a great time to see this underappreciated migrant spectacle.
