I made a brief foray through these wetlands, hiking with my family on Sunday afternoon. The glorious weather made for a perfect hike, and quite a few birds were out, even though the hike was late in the afternoon. Ducks are shorebirds were very low here, with only Mallards & Pied-billed grebes for the former and Kildeer and both Yellowlegs for the latter. Sparrows & wrens were the real focus of the trip (along with butterflies), and we found a good assortment of sparrows, with 8 species, including numbers of White-crowned, Field, and Swamp. No Ammodramus, however, and the habitat here is not that extensive and decidedly off-trail. There was at least 1 Marsh Wren, but no Sedge Wrens yet. Butterflies were extraordinary despite the late date, with lots of Whites & sulphurs, as well as surprising numbers of vagrants including Buckeyes, Variegated fritillaries, and Checkered Skippers.
