With a bit of free time this morning, I hit bikepaths along 2 of the north-south riparian greenbelts here in Columbus: Big Walnut Creek and Alum Creek. The Big Walnut bikepath is in the heart of the Gahanna greenbelt, running from Woodside Green Park to Academy Park. The Alum Creek Bike trail covers a much longer stretch, but one of the most productive areas seems to be between Morse Rd. and State 161, centered around Tanager Woods. Both paths run along a narrow riparian corridor, with dense riparian forest interrupted by small meadows and marshes, along with park ball fields. Today temperate migrants arrived in Columbus 'in bulk', and both paths were bustling with birds. Highlights from an hour at each included

Woodpeckers - plenty of Flickers at each (4 & 5), along with a Pileated at Big Walnut and a sapuscker at Alum

Vireos - a Blue-headed along Alum was the only one this morning

Blue Jays - trickle of small groups produced 10+ at Big Walnut and 14+ at Alum

Wrens - Big Walnut had 2 House Wrens and 4 WinterWrens, while Alum had none (which is quite unusual). Both had the expected resident Carolinas.

Kinglets - good numbers of both species at both sites (around 4-5 of each at each site)

Thrushes - some Robins at Big Walnut (20+) contrasted with many of them at Alum (120+). A Hermit was also along Big Walnut at Academy park.

Cedar Waxwings - fair-sized flocks at both sites (60+ at BW, 90+ at Alum)

Warblers - lots of Yellow-rumps at both sites (20+, 22+), as well as a few Black-thr.Greens. Big Walnut also had single Nashville and Palm warblers, both at Academy Park.

SParrows - plenty of small flocks of White-throateds at both spots, along with smaller numbers of Song & Chipping Sparrows. Big Walnut had a small flocks of Field Sparrows and Juncos, and both sites had a few Swamp Sparrows

Blackbirds - small numbers of redwings and grackles overflew both sites, and Alum also had 2 cowbirds. No big flocks today, but they should still be around.

Finches - good numbers of Goldfinches at both sites (20+, 30+). A single Purple Finch was also along the Alum Creek bikepath.
