Subject: Bird Studies Canada, Marsh Monitoring Program - Ohio Areas of
Concern

Kathy Jones, our volunteer coordinator, provided your contact
information as an individual who has had contact with the Marsh
Monitoring Program (MMP) in the past. I am the Aquatic Programs
Biologist with the MMP. As a unique binational marsh bird and amphibian
population monitoring initiative of Bird Studies Canada, the MMP has
successfully engaged hundreds of volunteer Citizen Scientists since 1995
to measure the status and trends of wetland-dependent birds and
amphibians, and has provided valuable information about the health and
ecological integrity of Great Lakes coastal and inland wetlands. Since
its inception, the MMP has worked with AOC RAP committees to provide
wildlife and habitat-related data toward those RAP's BUI delisting
criteria information needs.
The MMP has recently been awarded funding by the U.S. National Fish and
Wildlife Foundation to recruit, train and support local MMP volunteer
coordinators to help oversee MMP monitoring activities in the Black
River and Maumee AOC regions, as well as other AOC regions in the U.S.
These volunteer MMP regional coordinators will help to expand the
presence of the MMP in the Black River and Maumee River AOC regions by
helping to promote the program locally, recruit new volunteers, provide
them appropriate survey training, and mentor and assist their MMP
monitoring activities during the survey season. Coordinators will work
closely with MMP staff to complete their tasks and responsibilities.
We are currently looking to recruit one or more volunteer MMP regional
coordinators for your area, and I am contacting you in hopes that you
might know of people who would be interested in the position, or you
might be willing to help pass on information about this coordinator
recruitment initiative. I have attached an electronic copy of our MMP
coordinator recruitment brochure, as well as an accompanying document
describing the position in more detail. As an alternative to the
brochure, I have also provided a 1-page MMP coordinator recruitment
advertisement. This document and the brochure include a registration
form for anyone who is interested in applying for the position. We are
hoping to have our coordinators secured by November 15th. For reference,
I have also included a fact sheet describing the Marsh Monitoring
Program itself in more detail. If you know of any individuals that might
be interested in helping to coordinate MMP monitoring in the Black River
and Maumee River AOC regions, or if you had an opportunity to distribute
these materials in any way, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if
you have any comments or questions about our plans to establish local
MMP coordinators, please let me know. I can provide further information
about this Marsh Monitoring Program AOC project if requested. Thanks
very much,
Kristen Harrison
