Brant: John Pogacnik reported 29 passing his lakefront home in North Perry,
Lake County, on the 7th.
Red-necked Grebe: One at Buck Creek State Park, Clark County, was reported by
Doug Overacker on the 4th.
Cattle Egret: Chuck Anderson's and Tom Kemp's Wood County Big Day on the 3rd
turned up four in a borrow-pit pond where I-75 crosses Rt. 6.
Little Gull: Jen Brumfield reported one flying along Headlands Beach SP, Lake
County, on the 3rd. On the same day, John Pogacnik saw one feeding with
Bonaparte's Gulls in the lake by his home in North Perry, Lake County.
Northern Saw-Whet Owl: Philip Chaon found one roosting along the path to the
breakwall at Headlands Beach SP, Lake County, on the 2nd. The bird was not
relocated on the 3rd. Banders in Ross County are having stellar results
according to Jim McCormac's blog.
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD: An immature male has been visiting a garden and feeders in
Bluffton, Allen County, at least through the 7th. The bird was captured and
banded on the 29th. Pictures are at Rarebird.org. Birders are welcome. Linda
Houshower, the homeowner, provided these directions: Bluffton is off I-75, 18
miles north of Lima or south of Findlay. Take either Bluffton exit, east on
Main St. to the Fire station on one corner, and East of Chicago on the other
corner, the street is Washington. Turn left(north),3 stop signs(Jackson,
Lawn, Spring), the house is a tall brown with red roof on the right, where
the street dead ends. Park on the side of the street or at the dead end. Come
up the sidewalk towards the house, can't miss the feeders and activity.
Northern Shrike: On the 4th, Jack Stenger and Sean Williams found one at
Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area along CH-71 just east of TH-108.
Le Conte's Sparrow: Kirk Westendorf concluded that a sparrow seen at Armleder
Park, Hamilton County, on the 3rd was this species. Multiple observers
refound it on the 4th.
Common Redpoll: Jen Brumfield reported a fly-over at Headlands Beach SP, Lake
County, on the 3rd. Rick Counts had a fly-over at his home in Northern
Wyandot County on the 7th.
Evening Grosbeak: Ethan Kistler alerted the birding community on the 3rd that
up to 29 of these rare visitors were visiting the Geauga County backyard of
Linda Gilbert (of Brown-headed Nuthatch fame). Pictures are at Rarebird.org.
Birders are welcome. The address is 1604 Bell Street, South Russell, Ohio.
About 20 were still being seen at least through the 6th. They reportedly are
more difficult to find after mid-afternoon. John Pogacnik had two briefly
visit his home in North Perry, Lake County, on the 3rd. Tom Kemp had two at
his home in Bowling Green, Wood County, on the 4th.
