I was on Kelleys Island from Thursday, November 15 through Sunday, November
18. I have reported on the census date of the 17th. In addition, several
other observations of note were made.

Surf Scoter - an immature bird has been hanging around the ferry dock since
November 6 and was still present on November 18.

Long-tailed Duck - several were shot by duck hunters on Thursday (11/15)and
Friday (11/16) but I never observed any along the island shoreline.

Sandhill Crane - Lee and Sandy Tkach had a flock of 40+ birds flying over
the island on Wednesday, November 14.

Northern Saw-whet Owl - only one banded on Friday night (11/16) but it
brings the total banded on Kelleys this fall to 42 with only 6 nights of
banding. Off the 4 saw-whet banding sites currently running in Ohio, the
number of banded owls is over 150 birds.

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 2 observed November 18.

American Pipit - several observed daily flying across the island (except for
11/17 - census day)

White-winged Crossbill - Friday, November 16, a flock of 15+ were heard and
observed flying across Long Point at about 8:00 AM.

Large numbers of sparrows and blackbirds moved onto the island with Saturday
nights front. Pat Hayes had American Tree, Chipping, Fox, White-throated,
White-crowned, and Dark-eyed Junco at his feeders on Sunday morning. Along
with them were hundreds of Red-winged and Rusty Blackbirds, Common Grackle,
and Brown-headed Cowbirds.

Also noted is the absence of Great Black-backed Gulls around the island.
Usually by November there are numerous birds of various ages. Over the last
few days only one adult was observed (and not on census day!).

Strange fall migration!
