Hi all,

Matt Anderson posted this on rarebird.org.

"About 25 minutes ago, I was treated to fantastic looks at a female Pine Grosbeak near the intersection of Rt 295 and Obee Road just east of Oak Openings Preserve Metropark.
While scanning a very large group of waxwings (looking for a Bohemian!), the grosbeak flew in and landed about 20' feet above me, affording superbs of all key field marks -- long tail, wingbars, stubby bill, etc. Additionally,it was giving a two-note whistled call both as it flew and for the minute or so it was perched. It then dove into a thicket of honeysuckle bushes about 40-50' north of Obee halfway between Rt 295 and a small driveway with a galvanized gate posted posted with "No Trespassing" signs. I was unable to get the grosbeak to respond to pishing or screech owl whistles, so i did not see it again.

Note that there are MANY waxwings in the area -- I'd estimate at least 300-400, so this is also a spot worthy of Bohemian searching. Nothing I saw stood out this morning. I suspect that the grosbeak had been feeding on the south side of the road prior to perching above me.

This is a traditionally good spot for winter birding. The Honeysuckle bushes are loaded with berries.

I do not recall a winter where so many of erratically-occuring northern songbirds have shown up in such a narrow window of time. Let's hope that more of this stuff starts settling in.

  Matt Anderson"
