I found three probable Surf Scoters this morning at Lake Logan in Hocking
County. Long distance viewing was a factor in the identification process as
was the poor light and choppy water. Add to that, the birds often had their
head tucked behind their wing, so there is a remote chance that two of these
birds were White-winged Scoters, but my gut feeling is that they were Surfs.
These birds were located near the middle of the body of water, and were
visible by parking at the parking/fishing area located about midway on Lake
Logan Drive between the Northwest and Southeast ends of the lake. A scope
is necessary.
