Between approximately 2:07 and 2:15pm this afternoon Matt Yawney and I
observed a first-year-plumage Prairie Falcon at Veler Road east of Route 2.
This location is just north of the western extent of Ottawa NWR.

The bird was first seen in flight lazily pursuing Mourning Doves in the
field east of Rte. 2. It had an obvious large-falcon body form, and I
immediately noticed dark axillaries. The Falcon banked several times just
to let us reconfirm and digest this field mark. It then proceeded to land
in the plowed portion of the field on the north side of Veler Road.

We were able to slowly drive our vehicle down Veler, and Matt was able to
capture several (forthcoming) digital photos. As seen on the camera's
screen, the photos should be diagnostic, but probably not suitable for
framing ;)

The bird remained perched for several minutes, allowing us to revel in our
good fortune before it launched itself back north, looped around south
stirring up a flock of Starlings prior to disappearing. There is no telling
whether this bird is chase-able, but it may be worth the effort.

p.s. We also had luck at the Huron Rivermouth: Sabine's, Little, and Lesser
Black-backed Gulls (one each) all were cooperative for us earlier in the
morning. Many thanks to those keeping us out-of-staters posted on this locale.
