News is going around about a new Web site from the forensics lab at
USF&WS. http://www.lab.fws.gov/featheratlas/ . It features photographs
of all wing and tail feathers for 64 North American bird species.
Because of the forensic angle, the majority are raptors. Most of the
rest are woodpeckers. I find some of the photos difficult to study on my
monitor, as they've chosen a black background, but if you want to see in
detail what is meant by the "wavy, white-accented [not always!] tail
bands" of the northern goshawk this is a place to do it.
