Yesterday, Dec. 12, Tim & I went to the Woodbury Wildlife Area to see if we
could find any raptors. Didn't hold out much hope but we were really
surprised by the numbers & variety we found. In less than 2 hours of driving the
roads there we counted 16 different raptors of 5 species.
In the evening we decided to try to locate the winter crow roost in
Coshocton. Every year it changes location, though usually not very far. It always
makes for a interesting hunt. We usually start by going up on a hill that
overlooks the river valleys and the city. We wait to see long streams of crows
flying & try to pinpoint as close as possible where they are headed. Drive
to that area & continue to watch for the huge swarms until we can drive right
to where they are coming in to roost. This year we found them in the trees
along the Muskingham river behind the Annin flag company at Ivy St & S. Third
St. 5000?, 10,000? Who knows, we sure couldn't tell. Now that we know
where to look, next time we will try to get there before they start coming in so
that possibly we can get some kind of count. Once they are in the trees, it
is impossible.
Raptor count at Woodbury:
Red-tailed Hawk--7
American Kestral--3
Northern Harrier--2, possibly 3 (could'nt get a long enough look to know for
sure)
Rough-legged Hawk--1
Accipiter species--2 (both moving too fast to id for sure but 1 looked large
(Cooper's) & 1 gave a Sharpie impression)
