jerry talkington found an immature northern gannet early this afternoon (12:30 pm, 12/23/2007) at east 72 street. the bird was observed diving in to the water and totally submerging itself. i did not see neither the iceland gull nor the glaucous gull found by gabe leidy on 12/22/2007 but my visit was brief. there were thousands of gulls feeding nearshore and within 500 yards of the shore so it may just take patience to find the white-winged gulls. when i left at 12:50 pm jerry had the gannet under observation several hundred yards off shore from the east 72nd street parking lot.
