I live out out on the west edge of Hilliard, and for the past few weeks
there have been huge numbers of Canada Geese (several thousand
approximately) residing in this general area. There is a large pond in my
neighborhood (across from my house) where a good group of them, usually up
to about 100-150 or so, like to hang out. A little while ago I was
pleasantly surprised to notice a very miniature version tucked among the
numerous bigger Canadas. I got some pictures of it--you can see them at

I've never seen a Cackling Goose before, but I've done my homework (David
Sibley breaks the whole issue down at
http://www.sibleyguides.com/canada_cackling.htm) and I'm pretty confident
this is a "Hutchinson's" Cackling Goose. I understand that most Cackling
Geese in Ohio would be the Hutchinson's variety. As I'm writing this, this
goose is still sitting out across the street at the pond. If you're
interested, the pond is at Spindler Rd & Summerlawn Dr in Hilliard. If you
want to contact me, please use [log in to unmask] Thanks!

Good birding and happy holidays!
