I was out scouting for the Columbus CBC and found quite a few unusual waterfowl in some very unexpected places. Basically I was visiting ponds & parks in East Columbus & Gahanna and found scads of Mallards & Geese. In among them at several stops were Mute Swan, Green-winged Teal, Gadwall, Wigeon, a Shoveler, Lesser Scaup and quite a few Hooded Mergansers. Given Nate Nye's reports of unusual geese out in Hilliard, birders in central Ohio might want to double-check local waterfowl flocks over the next few days, as it appears that the freezing temperatures to the north of us are driving down unusual waterbirds.
