at least two (2) adult little gulls in winter plumage were in the throngs of bonaparte's gulls off the west breakwall at headlands beach state park this morning (12/03.2007). i estimate that there were 3,500+ bonaparte's gulls both in the harbor area and at the mouth of the grand river. the gulls at the river mouth were obscured many times by crashing waves generated by the gale force winds of the morning. few waterfowl were noted but visibility was limited and we were not at the beach because of the wind. winds are still extremely strong and snow has been forecast for lakefront areas.
