I have talked with some people from Canada that are familiar with redpolls
and they feel the bird I photographed is a common redpoll. The major
problem is with the bill shape. A hoary's bill should be more conical.
Although this bird's bill is short, it is too long and narrow. The paleness
of the rump and undertail coverts are an excellent character for
identification, but some common redpolls can appear whitish. This bird was
very frosty, but within the range for common redpoll. I agree with them,
the bird is a common redpoll. With all the redpolls around, maybe there
will be another.
