Greetings folks -

A note which should have been included in my previous email regarding Dec 30th gull sightings at East 72nd. Also included in the mix was:

- A partial albino (leucistic) Herring Gull showing very white overall plumage, a bi-colored bill, light brown primaries (wingtips), and messy mottled gray feathering on the mantle. NOTE: This bird could appear very similar to a 2nd-winter Iceland Gull (example:) http://www.schmoker.org/BirdPics/Photos/Gulls/ICGU11.jpg; and less-so, immature Glaucous. For example only, this individual resembled this partial-leucistic Herring Gull shot I found on the web: http://www.pbase.com/crail_birder/image/77616378

- An adult HerringxGreat Black-backed hybrid was observed well. This bird, with a fairly clean white head and crisp overall plumage, was more similar to Great Black-back than Herring in mantle shade; thus being very similar to Lesser Black-backed mantle shade. Overall, the bird is bulky and heavy with a blocky head and heavy bill; but intermediate between GBB and Herring on all accounts.

The probability of more than one HerringxGreat Black-backed hybrid being present at East 72nd is high; study these dark-mantled gulls with care.
Best of birding - Jen Jen [log in to unmask], Ohio
