Today, I had the great pleasure of joining forces with Brian Zwiebel, Karl Overman and Peter Kaestner in an effort to help BSBO, Green Creek Wildlife Society and Ohio Young Birders on the Fremont Christmas Count.

The four of us were lucky enough to experience an extraordinary CBC moment! While standing in a tiny cemetery in the middle of Sandusky County, Brian heard some Tundra Swans calling in the distance and called our attention to them. Karl and I saw the flock flying toward us in the distance, and we both noticed a different bird with the 75 swans. We were not sure what it may be, but I can assure you we were not thinking about a Northern Gannet flying over corn stubble, miles from Lake Erie!! Peter was quick to get his glasses on the different bird, and within a few short seconds, he said: "Is that a gannet?! I think it's a gannet! It's a @^%$!@%^$ gannet!" All the birds flew closer to us, and after a short time, it was close enough to see the pertinent details. It actually WAS a Northern Gannet!!!

Without question, it was the single wildest CBC sighting I have ever had. A gannet over a corn field near Fremont. Crazy.

Thanks to all the regulars who made us outsiders feel right at home - even without the wayward gannet, the Fremont count was great fun.
