This is the Ohio Statewide Rare Bird Report for December 7, 2007.
Compiler: Paul Gardner. Email: [log in to unmask]

ROSS'S GOOSE: About midday on the 4th, Dan Sanders found one
with a flock of geese just south of Powell, Delaware County.
The flock could not be relocated that afternoon.

Long-tailed Duck: Bret McCarty located one at Lakewood Park,
Cuyahoga County, on the 2nd. On the 5th, Brian Menker found two
at Old Reid Park, which is about 1/4 mile downstream of the dam
at Buck Creek State Park, Clark County. Rita Schneider found a
female at Avon Power Plant, Lorain County, on the 6th.

NORTHERN GANNET: John Pogacnik reported a juvenile flying
around Huron on the 1st.

PLEGADIS SP. IBIS: Lisa Brohl reported that on the 30th she
observed two dark ibises land in the wetland "east of Rt. 269
just as we pulled off of Route 2." This is, I believe, Medusa
Marsh, Erie County.

Northern Goshawk: John Pogacnik interrupted an adult conducting
a feederwatch at his home in North Perry, Lake County, on the
6th.

Golden Eagle: Glen Crippen saw an adult flying around The
Wilds, Muskingum County, on the 1st.

Little Gull: John Pogacnik found a second-year bird at Lorain
harbor on the 1st. Ray Hannikman found two adults at Headlands
Beach State Park, Lake County, on the 3rd.

Sabine's Gull: The last positive report of the Huron, Erie
County, individual seems to have been on the 1st.

Snowy Owl: The adult owl hanging around the Point Place
neighborhood of Toledo seems to range from 116th to 119th
streets near the lake. The last positive report was on the 2nd.
Photos at Rarebird.org.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird: A female still visiting a feeder on
the east side of Toledo as of December 5 has set the Ohio
state-record for latest fall occurrence of the species. Photos
in a couple of threads at www.rarebird.org.

RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD: Tim Tolford reports banding an adult female
on the 30th at a residence in the Hartwell/Wyoming neighborhood
of Cincinnati. Apparently the bird has been faithful to the
feeder since late October and was still being seen this
morning. The immature male visiting a garden and feeders in
Bluffton, Allen County, remains through the 6th. The bird was
captured and banded on October 29th. Pictures are at
Rarebird.org. Birders are welcome. Linda Houshower, the
homeowner, provided these directions: Bluffton is off I-75, 18
miles north of Lima or south of Findlay. Take either Bluffton
exit, east on Main St. to the Fire station on one corner, and
East of Chicago on the other corner, the street is Washington.
Turn left(north),3 stop signs(Jackson, Lawn, Spring), the house
is a tall brown with red roof on the right, where the street
dead ends. Park on the side of the street or at the dead end.
Come up the sidewalk towards the house, can't miss the feeders
and activity.

Northern Shrike: At least seven were reported this week. The
one reported last week in Geauga County south of Chagrin Falls
on Chagrin River Road near the power line easement about 1000
ft east of the Cuyahoga County line was reported again on the
5th. Birds eyeing residential feeders were reported on the 30th
in Darke County, on the 3rd in Ashtabula County, and on the 5th
in Lucas County. In southern Wood County, Bill Rinehart
reported one on the 30th at Wood County Cricket Cove Park on
Freyman Road west of Cygnet. On the 1st Glen Crippen found one
at The Wilds, Muskingum County, on Zion Ridge Road about a
quarter to a half-mile from SR 146. Lisa Brohl spotted one at
the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center parking lot
on the 2nd.

PINE GROSBEAK: There was a positive report on the 2nd, no
reports since then. The bird (now two apparently) was found on
the 21st by Matt Anderson along Obee Road just east of its
intersection with Rt 295. This is just east of Oak Openings
Metropark, Lucas County. A metal gate on the north side of Obee
Road and a sheep pen on the south are good landmarks. Photos at
Rarebird.org.

White-winged Crossbill: John Pogacnik photographed one at his
North Perry home, Lake County, on the 2nd. Photos at
www.rarebird.org.

Common Redpoll: Reported from residential feeders on the 1st in
North Olmstead, Cuyahoga County; on the 2nd in North Perry,
Lake County; and on the 5th in Kidron, Wayne County. Gabe Leidy
found 10 at Headlands Beach State Park, Lake County, on the
1st. On the 2nd he reported a flock of nine at West Creek
Reservation, and Bret McCarty reported one from Huntington
Beach Reservation, both in Cuyahoga County. Su Snyder reported
one at The Wilderness Center near Wilmot, Stark County, on the
6th.
