I started the day at Camp Dennison to fill in waterfowl missed on
Januray 1, where I added one Hermit Thrush (48), thirty Gadwall (49),
four Black Ducks (50), four drake Green-winged Teal (51), twelve
Redheads (52). While looking for waterfowl, an immature Cooper's Hawk
(53) flew by. I made a quick stop at Rowe Arboretum where I found at
least two Pine Siskins (54) with a flock of about 30 House Finches and
10 American Goldfinches. Then I headed to East Fork State Park again
looking for some missing birds. Along Route 222 on the way to Route
125, I found an American Kestrel (55), and closer to Route 125 at sharp
right had turn just before Route 125 I found a Red-shouldered Hawk (56)
perched in a Sycamore Tree and calling. At the boat ramp on the way to
the saddle dam, I found a Pileated Woodpecker (57) and met another
January lister. Sorry, I did not ask your name. I stopped at the south
beach, and found four Bonaparte's Gulls (58) flying by west. At a
private feeder on Sugartree Road, I waited in vain for the Fox Sparrow
but found four Purple Finches (59) and a Eastern Towhee (60). Then I
visited Spring Grove Cemetery looking in vain for the Merlin reported
there. At the pond closest to the woodland area, right along the road
with the yellow broken center line, I found two Fox Sparrows (61)
feeding along the road with White-throated Sparrows and Song Sparrows.
They were roosting in a large yew along the road and pond edge and
flying out to the roadside to feed. I ended the day at Armleder Park
looking for the Short-eared Owls. While waiting for the owls to fly, I
added two Northern Harriers (62), a Belted Kingfisher (63) and finally,
between 4:30 and 5:00 pm two Short-eared Owls (64). Sixty-four (64)
birds is a very good list for only two days of birding in January in
Ohio!
