Greetings birders -

I'm forwarding a sighting from NE Ohio birder Chriss Fulton: today (Jan 6) around noon she had 2 Common Redpolls visiting her backyard thistle feeder in Stow (Summit County).

On a side note, some excellent birdfeeding areas and 'windows on wildlife' open to the public in Summit and Cuyahoga Counties include:

Seiberling Naturealm, Summit County Metroparks
North Chagrin Nature Center, Cleveland Metroparks
Rocky River Nature Center, Cleveland Metroparks
Brecksville Nature Center, Cleveland Metroparks

Already this winter, North Chagrin Nature Center has hosted a handful of redpolls and a single Evening Grosbeak; though neither species is visiting regularly. The fantastic arboretum at Seiberling Naturealm, in recent years past, has held White-winged Crossbill and Northern Saw-whet Owl. Local birders would do well to drop by these nature center feeding stations in chance of seeing redpolls, siskins, and perhaps a visiting grosbeak.

Naturalists at Cleveland Metroparks have received MANY inquiries from avid birders this winter in regards to northern finch visitors visting nature center feeders. Here's the general run-down on a few of the Metroparks nature center feeder reports. As a whole, there have been very few visits from northern finches, but feeders are constantly stocked with prime attractive seeds:

Evening Grosbeak: only once this winter did a single male grosbeak visit the North Chagrin Nature Center feeders (Gary Meszaros). No other reports, save for a single grosbeak feeding on the roadside on SOM Center Road (Tim Krynak) in December, just south of North Chagrin Reservation.

Common Redpoll: Two visits by single birds at North Chagrin feeders, December. No other reports.

Pine Siskin: A single bird visited the thistle feeders in the wildlife garden at Garfield Park Nature Center, in late November. Several birds heard/seen overhead in Brecksville, near Sleepy Hollow Golf Course (just northwest of Brecksville Reservation). No other reports at Metroparks feeders.

best of birding -
Jen
