I decided to stay away from lake Erie this morning as the wind gusts and
snow didn't appeal.
Heading south on SR 301, I wanted to stop at Carlisle Reservation but it
was closed for the day.
A brief peek around the Oberlin Reservoir yielded one Gull, ID
uncertain, as I didn't break out the scope.
I spotted a few Horned Larks as I drove south on West Rd. and past the
also locked Caley Reservation.
My next stop, the Wellington Upground Reservoir was only slightly better
than Oberlin. There I saw
about 100 American Coots, a Ring-necked Duck, and a number of Canada
Geese. The visibility
was getting worse, so I again left the scope in the vehicle.

While heading towards Sr 58 and Findley State park, I stopped on Griggs
Rd. to observe a flock of Horned larks
numbering about 100. At one point, when they flew near the car, I was
able to spot a single Lapland Longspur.

Findley was pretty slow, but I did see a couple adult Bald Eagles
perched in a tree on the shore near the dam.

I left Findley, and was on Pratt Rd., when I spotted another group of
about 50 Horned Larks and another 4 Longspurs.

As I headed back north on West Rd., I stopped for what is the largest
flocks of Wild Turkeys I seen in Ohio. I counted 35.
The best part was that one of them was all white! They were seen about
1/2 mile south of Caley Reservation.

I drove up to the Lorain County Regional Airport on Russia Rd. and saw a
Northern Harrier, but by then, visibility was
maybe 100 yards.

My last stop on the way home was Sunrise Memorial Park on SR 252 in
Olmsted Twp. It was slow there as well, but
I did see a small group of Cedar Waxwings. The cemetery looks like it
might be a good spot for folks in this area to
monitor this winter. Lots of birch and crab apple trees.

Happy New Year,

Chris Pierce
N. Olmsted, OH
