The year 2008 is beginning on an interesting note. Several species that I
usually head north to Wyandot County to see have been appearing in Southeast
Delaware County (Delorme 58C3). Today Linda and I were driving on Condit Road
near SR 37 and we located a Rough-legged Hawk perched in a tree just off the
road. It alit and circled us several times giving good looks at the white rump
markings and the under wings before it settled down again in the tree. We
continued on so as to not distress the hawk. Previously we have located flocks
of Horned Larks, Lapland Longspurs and Snow Buntings along the local country
roads near Galena.

Other species being located at or near Hoover Reservoir have included
Cackling Goose, Greater White-fronted Goose, Blue morf Snow Geese, Common Redpolls,
Pine Siskin, Red-breasted Nuthatches and Wild Turkeys. I hope this is an
omen for a great birding year.

Of course Murphy's Law is at work here as many of these were no where to be
found on Count Day or during count week for the Hoover Reservoir Christmas
Bird Count. Better late than never.
