I stopped in at Ottawa NWR today around noon and after hearing greater white-fronted geese had been seen there the day before went out to look for them. I didn't find them at this stop but I did find all three species of swan (almost all Tundra Swans), a large ammount of Northern Pintail, and as I watched, a large flock of Snow Geese flew in. (I counted 48 as they flew in: 27 blue and 21 white. Bill Whan (who was coming in as I came out) reported 39 but with how birds were flying in and out all the time the difference doesn't surprise me). Bill and company told me that the Bittern and Yellowthroat were at Sheldon Marsh (thanks guys) and I went there and found them both (but only with a bit of patience). I then went back to Ottawa for the evening and was there from 4:00 till sundown. When I got back the Snow Geese were gone but I did find 4 Cackling Geese (maybe 6 but two of the little group I didn't feel good about calling Cacklers.) At first I had no Greater
White-Fronteds but a little after 4:30 a pair flew in. There was also another goose/duck thing there. I do not know what it was but it was most likely an escapee. In case anyone is interested it was goose like in form with a short neck and between a Canada Goose and a Mallard in size. Its bill was the color of a white-fronted and its body was mostly tan (barn owl color). It was very white around the bill and down the front. Most striking was its reddish colored rump. Again, probably just an escaped pet. But anyhow, a great day that brought my list up to 118.

  Good Birding!
