Yesterday (Feb 16), Sean Williams and I birded Delaware Wildlife Area in Delaware County. Delaware Reservoir was mostly frozen, but there were two openings in the ice where many waterfowl congregated. Among these were 10 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 1 CACKLING GOOSE, and 6 Tundra Swans. Most of the birds were Canada Geese and Mallards, but there was a decent smattering of other species. The open water is visible from the dam and Leonardsburg Rd, but those looks are distant. The best vantage points are from the southernmost boat ramp in Delaware State Park and the east bank, which requires a cross-country walk to access.
In the past moth Sean and I have found two Long-eared Owl roosts in Delaware County. However, they are both on private property and the owners do not wish to reveal their locations. Even though birders don't have the opportunity to view these owls, I thought it would be of general interest to the list-serve.
