The gale force winds and cold brought large numbers of horned larks and
snow buntings all over South Bass island. There were along the roadsides,
at the Put-in-Bay Airport, Perry's Monument grounds, and especially in the
fields near the South Bass Lighthouse-in same cases 200 at a time, other
places 25-30 in clusters. A few lapland longspurs were among the larks and
buntings. Snow buntings and horned larks were also seen along the edge of
the cliffs on the west side of the island and in some cases flying over
the jammed up cakes of ice.
In the open water on the east side of the island, there were hundreds of
common goldeneye as well as a few common mergansers, scaup, and
bufflehead. As the ducks dove, the wind caught the spray and sent it
skyward! Most gulls were sitting low on the ice-herring, ring-billed, and
a few great black-backed.
